The National Cancer Institute is seeking a Medical Officer to advance an innovative program of research to assess the equity, efficiency, and effectiveness of state-of-the-art cancer therapies as they disseminate from clinical trials into community-based settings. Of particular interest is the role of clinician, organizational, and economic factors that facilitate or hinder evidence-based adoption of cancer therapies.

Position Description:

The position is in the Healthcare Assessment Research Branch (HARB) in the Healthcare Delivery Research Program of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences in Rockville, MD. HARB supports a portfolio of investigator-initiated grants, and develops funding opportunities and research resources to support policy-relevant research on economic and health services research questions across the cancer continuum. The ultimate purpose of this research is to improve the understanding of healthcare delivery in order to improve cancer outcomes, reduce cancer-related health disparities, and minimize the burden of cancer to patients, their families, and society.

The successful applicant will assume responsibility for the Patterns of Care Initiative, which evaluates the dissemination of state-of-the-art cancer therapy in to community practice.  This includes designing new approaches to better understand multilevel predictors of the use of guideline-concordant therapies.  In addition, the incumbent will monitor available sources of data that can be utilized by the extramural research community to study the use and outcomes of cancer treatment, identify gaps in available treatment data, and develop new research resources and initiatives as appropriate.  Duties of this position also include managing grants and contracts as well as providing content expertise to the division to inform the development of funding announcements and other initiatives focused on the treatment of cancer.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position must have an M.D., research experience including an established record of peer-reviewed publications, and demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following: epidemiology, health economics, clinical oncology, and/or health services research. The candidate must be able to function independently and work well across transdisciplinary groups and organizations.  This announcement is for a career position with the U.S. government and requires that the applicant is a citizen of the U.S.
