Presented by: Steve Martino

As part of the QUERI Implementation Network Series, Steve Martino, PhD presented the results of a hybrid Type 3 effectiveness-Implementation randomized cluster trial testing the effectiveness of three strategies to promote provider use of motivational interviewing for substance misuse with patients within a general medical inpatient hospitalist service. The three strategies are:

  • a continuing medical education workshop that provides background and “shows” providers how to conduct MI (See One);
  • an apprenticeship model involving workshop training plus live supervision of bedside practice (Do One); and
  • ordering MI from the psychiatry consultation-liaison (CL) service after learning about it in a workshop (Order One).

Dr. Martino described the study’s rationale, design and mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative results, and implications.

The intended audience for this webinar includes: implementation science researchers, hospital education administrators, and medical and addiction treatment providers.
