Rapid Ethnographic Assessment Toolkit
The Rapid Ethnographic Assessment (REA) takes the key features of ethnography and adapts them to short timelines and need for quick, actionable results. REA can be an effective method in implementation science for efficiently gathering data to understand implementation barriers and facilitators in organizational settings. It can also be used to document flows of people, work, and communication to guide the selection and deployment of implementation strategies. This toolkit introduces the REA methodology for application in implementation studies. It provides a general background that highlights some of REA’s core tenets, offers examples of REA application from the implementation science literature, and provides practical guidance to help you use REA in your work. The toolkit was designed for researchers with knowledge of implementation science and qualitative methods. Because REA is a team-based approach, a group with complementary skills and expertise in both areas can be effective at using the toolkit and applying the method.
